Deadline for Jameson Fellowship Rapidly Approaching

Scholars hoping to snag $5,000 for research at the Library of Congress have until March 15 to submit applications for the J. Franklin Jameson Fellowship in American History. The Jameson Fellowship is jointly sponsored by the library and the American Historical Association and was created to help academicians in the early stage of their careers defray research-related expenses. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree (earned within the past seven years) and cannot have a published book or a book deal. Also, the money mustn’t be used to finish a dissertation.

The 2007 winner will receive the $5,000 over a 2-3 month period (depending on his or her preference) plus a workspace at the Library of Congress. Although Jameson Fellows are not required to finish their projects during the length of the fellowship, they are expected to summarize their findings at a brief meeting sponsored by the AHA and the LOC. Non-tenured faculty, public historians, faculty from two-year institutions, and independent scholars are especially encouraged to apply.
