Time to Update Your Directory Listing

David Darlington | Apr 11, 2007

The AHA is now in the process of updating its Directory of History Departments, Historical Organizations, and Historians for the 2007–08 academic year. All departments who presently list or formerly listed in the Directory should have received a postcard and an e-mail from the AHA soliciting updates for the new edition. If your department has not received a request for updated information, please write the Directory editors, or call 202-544-2422 x120.

The Directory of History Departments, Historical Organizations, and Historians is the premier listing of institutions in the history profession. The 2006–07 Directory featured 848 history departments and other history organizations (such as archives, foundations, government programs, libraries, and museums) as well as nearly 30,000 historians. The Directory has comprehensive information for every history department listed, including address and contact information, degrees offered, areas of specialization, enrollment, tuition rates, academic and financial aid deadlines, and a complete faculty roster with degree information and up to three specializations for each faculty member. Nearly every PhD program in the United States and Canada regularly lists in the Directory, and each program’s PhD recipients for that year are listed in its entry, complete with dissertation title and job placement (if known at press time).

Institutions purchasing a listing in the Directory are entitled to two copies for their own use, to be delivered during the fall semester 2007.

Departments are responsible for the accuracy of their Directory listing, so please take the time to review your listing and submit any changes to the AHA. Prior listings and authorization forms can be requested from the AHA or by visiting this web page. New programs wanting to list are always welcome. The deadline for Directory updates is Tuesday, May 15, 2007. Additional small revisions (such as the announcement of new hires) may be accepted until the end of June.

David Darlington is co-editor of the Directory.
