Summer is winding down, school is starting up, and Perspectives is back with the September issue. The inspiration for the cover photo and title comes from John Dower’s article, “Lessons from Iwo Jima”, one of two articles in the Film and Media section of this issue. “Lessons” are of course a fitting theme for this time of year.

Also find AHA President Barbara Weinstein’s article, “The Case of the Incredible Shrinking Historians?” and her examination of Sam Tanenhaus’s article “History, Written in the Present Tense,” written right after noted historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr.’s death. Weinstein applauds Tanenhaus’s “eloquent testimony to Schlesinger’s extraordinary place in American intellectual life” but takes issue with his perception of the current state of the historical profession.

In AHA News, the Council is proposing amendments to the AHA’s constitution and members can weigh in on the issue. Read Executive Director Arnita Jones’s explanation on the reasoning behind the changes.

With the 122nd Annual Meeting just a few months away, start preparing with Sharon K.
