The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), a part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), offers grants for two Publishing Historical Records project categories (the Colonial and Early National Period and the New Republic through the Modern Era). For the Colonial and Early National Period grants, projects may focus on the papers of major figures from American life or cover broad historical movements in politics, military, business, social reform, the arts, and other aspects of the national experience (predominantly prior to 1820). Grants are awarded for collecting, describing, preserving, compiling, editing, and publishing documentary source materials. Award amounts range from $20,000 to $250,000 and 35-40 grants may be given out. Those eligible include: individuals, nonprofit organizations, colleges, universities, state or local governments, and Native American tribes or groups.  For more information and instructions on how to apply see the grant page.
