Boston Apps for the 125th Annual Meeting

We’ve found free and cheap apps to help you navigate the Boston Freedom Trail, museums, and the MBTA. Also, learn which apps will keep you up-to-date with Boston News, locate the nearest restaurant or Starbucks (and their free wifi), and even track an 1849 Boston murder.

So between texting colleagues, checking for Job Center messages, and calling home to share what a good time you’re having, make use of some of these apps. And if you can’t make it to meeting this year, stay home and take a look back at the history apps we rounded up earlier this year.

  • Tour Boston’s Freedom Trail
    Available for iPhone and Android
    Cost: $2.99
    The Tour Boston’s Freedom Trail app (for iPhone and Android) covers 40 stops on Boston’s Freedom Trail and provides audio, HD videos, maps, historical info, restroom locations, handicap accessibility, contact info and hours of operation. For iPhone users, there’s a different (and free) Freedom Trail Walking Tour from another company 
  • Boston Globe
    Cost: Free
    Access news and articles from the Boston Globe on iPhone or Android.
  • BostonUSA
    Cost: Free
    From the Boston Tourism and Visitors Bureau this is app offers a digital version of the complete Official Visitor’s Guide to Boston. Please note, some comments on this app have said that it is a very large file. Available on iPhone or Android.
  • Yelp
    Cost: Free
    After a long day of sessions and events at the Annual Meeting, you’re going to get hungry. Find the closest restaurants and read reviews of them on the Yelp iPhone or Android apps.
  • Starbucks Finder
    Cost: Free
    Even if you don’t enjoy Starbucks coffee, you may enjoy Starbucks free wifi. Since they’re on every other corner, getting connected to the internet is easier than ever. While you’re at the meeting, if you don’t want to head to the Hynes or the Quiet Room (which will both be offering free wireless internet), maybe you want to check out a nearby Starbucks.   • Museums in Boston
    Cost: Free.
    Lists museums in Boston (and separates them into categories) along with their contact info, hours, costs, events.
  • Boston Herald
    Cost: Free
    Use this app to read Boston news, weather, traffic, sports, and more from the Boston Herald.
  • AnyStop: MBTA
    Cost: Free
    Track transit in Boston in real time through this app.

iPhone

  • MassTransit
    Cost: $3.99
    Track all the Massachusetts Bay Transporation Authority’s (MBTA) systems (rail, bus, subway, and boat). View maps, get alerts, and track bus locations in real time.
  • Free Boston
    Cost: $0.99
    Through this iPhone app find out about free events, mainly at museums, going on while you’re in Boston. The app includes times, locations, contact information, and more.
  • Murder on Beacon Hill
    Cost: $4.99
    Just for fun, track an 1849 Boston murder through geotags, videos, and stops at different locations in Boston. Learn more in this article.
