The University of Notre Dame recently announced that it will open the Donald R. Keough School of Global Affairs, its first new college in nearly a century. Professor of history and longtime AHA member R. Scott Appleby has been appointed the school’s inaugural Marilyn Keough Dean.

Appleby previously served as the director of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, which will become part of the new school. A scholar of American religious and intellectual history, he will look to experts across many disciplines to help develop a vision that will guide students’ “preparation for leadership in an increasingly interconnected world.”

“By launching the Keough School now, at a time when the world is faced with unprecedented challenges and opportunities,” said Appleby, “we can build on the achievements of international affairs while forging dynamic new approaches to research, education and outreach that are truly global.”

The American Historical Association commends Dr. Appleby for his achievement.
