Blue City, Red State: A Historian's Reflections on a City's Politics - January 10, 2013

New Orleans is a defiantly blue city in an otherwise overwhelmingly red state. Many of its residents see themselves as constantly besieged by Herculean efforts to control New Orleans’s politics and change its culture, and they strive to remain an island of political liberalism and social and cultural laissez-faire, even as parishes dominated by more conservative “values voters” surround the city on all sides.

The Mosque in Modern Europe - January 06, 2013

By Jennifer Reut

One of the interesting aspects of the panel entitled “The Mosque in Modern Europe” is that it intended to look at place as a locus of debates about national or cultural character, and in particular to recognize the built landscape as a site of anxiety about European identity. The panelists each focused on a different county in which the construction of a mosque or even its imagined presence provoked a highly specific set of local responses that revealed much about the mutability of national identity.

Session of the Week: Changing the Narrative: Linda K. Kerber and Evolving Histories of Women and the State - November 07, 2012

By James Grossman

It is not often that scholars in any discipline can refer to a colleague “changing the narrative.”  For historians, of course, that reference has a very special meaning.   This session appropriately honors a very special scholar.  Linda Kerber, former president of the AHA, Organization of American Historians, and American Studies Association, has played a major role in the transformation of whole fields of historical study, as well as the discipline itself.  This session will offer a glimpse into how and why that has happened.  The panel will help us to understand how a scholar’s “work” comprises more than just its parts – the traditional triad of teaching, publication, and service – but rather the impact of all of these on what we write, what we teach, and how we think about ourselves as historians.

Session of the Week: The Power of Cartography: Remapping the Black Death in the Age of Genomics and GIS - October 31, 2012

By Vanessa Varin

What caused the Black Death? This question has been the focus for scholars in both the humanities and microbiologist community for the past 30 years, and yet historians do not always actively engage with the work of their counterparts in the sciences. In response to emerging technology in the field of genetics/microbiology, a group of historians will convene at the annual meeting to discuss the topic of the Black Death (1346-1353) and current historiographical trends beyond the humanities.  The panel will discuss the topic from a global perspective, and reflect on current scholarship and emerging computer technology for data analysis and information gathering now being used by microbiologists. In total, the panel hopes to build a bridge between the humanities and scientific communities in order to generate multi-disciplinary scholarship.
