Name That Decade – Results

Late last year we asked AHA members and the public to name the decade, “offer[ing] their suggestions…for a catchy phrase that can wittily sum up the decade.” Ideas were submitted through the comment section on the blog. Then, at the beginning of this month, we asked you to cast your vote on the submissions. Well, the votes have been tallied, and the winner is: “The Lost Decade.” Congrats to Robert McCusker for submitting the winning phrase.

If we’re going to call it that, then it needs to be the “American Lost Decade”: Japan already had one in the ‘90s.

I don’t get it. Why was this decade more lost than any other? There were definitely plenty of very bad “things” (9/11, Iraq, Afghanistan, Great Recession—am I forgetting anything?). But being “lost” would seem to me to imply that nothing was learned, that it was wasted time. I don’t think so.

“American lost decade” was not even in a candidate so what is really going on? The Dictionary chief editors at the turn of the millennium were looking for an alpha-numeric – if possible – two word terminology or name. Google posted you up second and third search result for “decade name” through February this year 2010 thinking as I you would lead the campaign for a more serious effort than the regular press frenzy of articles all touting alike comments. What happened to the 22 nominees you were asking the community online to vote on _ and – why did you revert to online voting when you set out to staff the vote at the American Historical Association. More of the same spineless journaling literally from todays journalists . I make copy and will publish this in wider context you can be sure. Your comments welcome at twentyzeros.com
