A Virtual International Museum Conference

By Debbie Ann Doyle

International Museum DayThe International Council of Museums (ICOM) has announced plans for the first virtual International Museum Day, to be hosted at the Tech Museum of Innovation on Second Life ® on May 18, 2008. International Museum Day has been held annually since 1977; this year’s theme focuses on museums as agents of social change and development. ICOM is inviting the world museum community in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, North America, Latin America, and Europe to create local activities that address the theme. The virtual meeting will allow participants to tour the virtual museum and help craft its exhibits, learn about developing virtual museums, and engage in conversation with colleagues. The event will be virtually staffed by museum professionals from around the world.

  1. Second Life is a great arena for this conference and is truly interactive.

Anyone who doesn’t already have a Second Life account will want to go to http://www.secondlife.com to download the software and pick out an avatar a few days before the conference in order to attend. BTW, I’m “KellyKate Flanagan” in world (in Second Life).
