Gutenberg-e Books Now Available Open Access and through ACLS Humanities E-Book - February 13, 2008

The electronic monographs published by Columbia University Press in the Gutenberg-e Project are now available in an open-access form through the University’s Libraries, and are also being made available through ACLS Humanities E-Book (HEB). By taking this new step, we will continue the project’s ongoing experiment with different forms of electronic publication, and also hope to demonstrate whether open-access publications will garner greater use and more citations from students and scholars.

AHR Online at its New Home at University of Chicago Press - December 05, 2007

The American Historical Review has now completed its transition to the University of Chicago Press web site. Recent issues started appearing on the site in the beginning of November, and now a number of advanced features have been added, making the new AHR fully available.

June Issue of the American Historical Review Online Now - July 03, 2007

The June issue of the American Historical Review contains two articles and an AHR Forum. One article offers an argument for an expansive understanding of the history of sensibilities, while the other takes us to Berlin, circa 1800, for an analysis of the impact of public clocks on emerging notions of time discipline. The Forum provides three perspectives on the Atlantic world in the 18th and early 19th century, focusing on imperial presence of Britain, Spain, and France.

Now Online: The April Issue of the American Historical Review - May 01, 2007

The articles range in subject matter from U.S. food policy in the 20th century and African Americans in Southern courts in the 19th century to the impact of American “talkies” on Australian culture. "Let the Sunshine In" with the April Issue of Perspectives - April 17, 2007

Wars and Worries: A Late Addition to the G.I. Roundtable Series - October 11, 2006

For anyone interested in World War II era history, we have just posted up a pamphlet on the question Shall We Have Universal Military Training. The pamphlet was originally written in early 1944 by Grayson L. Kirk, a government professor at Columbia University, at a time when members of the Franklin Roosevelt’s administration were actively promoting the idea of peacetime conscription to maintain a standing army after the war. At the last minute, however, members of George C. Marshall’s staff feared this pamphlet was too political and destroyed all 200,000 printed copies.
